The moon over San Pedro
Published January 24th, 2007 in Places and moments.
After a long walk we reached the summit of San Pedro Volcano in Sololá, right at Lake Atitlán.
It is not an easy hike if you don’t have the required physical condition. It took us a while to get there after a good meal… and just before the night, a nice picture at the summit.
As usual, the image doesn’t play fair to what my eyes saw. It seemed really close to us. It was cold and the lights from the small towns around the lake where the only thing that reminded us how lucky we are to be in a country like Guatemala.
Is just that you don’t need an helicopter to travel far far away to see this. It is just there, near.
Nice hike up, want to visit the place?
The walk begins at San Pedro, walking among the coffee plantations before entering the forest. It reminded me Acatenango, my favorite volcano, but sure, it is different. The woodpeckers are very visible right there. The sound is quite fast and noticeable. It is a fresh place to stay. Take your tent with you… there you go. The best view of Lake Atitlán in the morning.
Travel via Interamericana Road and you will see a sign that points to Sololá, this road will take you to Panajachel and you’ll need to cross the lake by boat. If you want to avoid the boat just keep driving and few kilometers later you’ll find a detour to your left (km142). Follow to get to San Pedro.
Once there ask to the locals for the way up. You can take a bus and finish the rest walking to get to the entrance of the Park. You’ll see tour policeman 24 hours and guides from 8 or 9 am.
