Sneaking snake at Ixobel

Snake

Snakes are mostly shy animals. They sense when somebody is around. Usually it is about 6 meters before visual contact (by vibrations). So, if you walked around in the jungle, pretty sure you have been around some snakes without noticing it.

On a trip to Petén, Poptún, decided with some friends to visit a nice cave around. It was a two hours walk and this is the little shy thing I found looking at me from the top of a rock over my head.

Tried to take a close picture but the little one was too shy. The shape of the head reveals if a snake is poisonous, this one I couldn’t tell. Too far. What never fails is looking for a small hole between their nose and eyes. If there is any… be careful…

Well… be careful anyways. Some are not poisonous but their bite is pretty painful.

The walk to the cave at Ixobel…

It is about two hours to get to the cave, which water will reach your knees right away and then you will have to swim. To get there, take the road to Petén from Izabal. Right before Poptún you’ll see the signs to Ixobel.

It is a nice place to camp, eat and work, where lots of foreigners use to say for a while. Be careful with thicks, there are plenty between the fields you’ll pass walking.
